It's FIESTA in Texas! Happy Cinco de Mayo

Happy May!

I love May!  First of all, it is my birthday month.  My husband loves to surprise me, and now my twelve-year-old is getting into the act.  I can't wait.

Second of all May is the month that we celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Texas!  A brief history:  Cinco de Mayo originated as a celebration of freedom and democracy just after the civil war.  It was originally celebrated in the American southwest, not in Mexico.  If you remember your history--Texas used to be part of Mexico!  The date of May 5th originates from the battle of Puebla (1862).  This is the day that the Mexican army under the leadership of Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin won a victory over the French army, in a most unlikely fashion.  FYI Mexican Independence day is celebrated on September 16.
In Texas, (and I think a lot of places are around the US) May fifth has come to be a fun spring celebration.  Go out and have some fun this month!

My kids are already starting to squirm because we are so close to the end of the year.  We have standardized testing next week, but after that, I want to give my kids some fun review stuff to work on in hopes of them not forgetting all that they have learned this year.

I am putting together a set of reviews for the end of the year.  The whole unit is aligned to the Common Core Math Standards for first grade.  (1.OA, 1.NBT, 1.MD, 1.G)

It follows the same form of my other teaching materials.  The unit includes guided and independent practice for each standard.  For each topic, there is at least one colorful guided practice re-teaching page designed for projection or for small group intervention.

I have used guided math in my classroom for over ten years.  I begin my teaching time block teaching/spiraling math concepts as a whole group, but most of my math block is devoted to guided practice in small groups followed by independent or small group practice, centers, and intervention in small groups.  Included in this resource are multiple guided practice pages for each topic that can be used for small group work or for intervention.  Also included are several printer-friendly pages with fewer graphics pages for independent guided practice, small group work, math stations or homework.

I hope you enjoy this as much as I have over the last ten years!
